Texas ~ Multiple Taxes: Tax Amnesty Program Ends August 17, 2012

The Texas Comptroller has issued a reminder to taxpayers that they have until August 17, 2012, to take advantage of Project Fresh Start, a limited tax amnesty program that provides for the waiver of penalties and interest on liabilities for Texas sales tax, franchise tax, and other taxes and fees. During the amnesty period, June 12 through August 17, 2012, taxpayers can avoid penalties and interest by filing or amending reports and paying any overdue taxes. The amnesty does not cover amounts originally due after April 1, 2012, underpaid tax returns (i.e., previously reported tax that was not paid), or taxes owed for filing periods that businesses have in audit. (TAXDAY, 2012/03/16, S.21 )

The amnesty is available for all state and local taxes and fees administered by the comptroller, with the exception of Public Utility Commission gross receipts assessments. Sports and community venue tax and property taxes are not administered by the comptroller and are not eligible. The Unclaimed Property program is not a part of tax amnesty.

Details on the Fresh Start tax amnesty are available at http://www.freshstart.texas.gov/ .
